Botataung Pagoda

The Botataung Pagoda was constructed then given its current name after the Burmese 1,000 men managed to bring the  relics of the Buddha back to Burma from India. In Burmese language, “tataung” normally refers to 1000.

The relics are now carefully restored and protected in the hollow interior of the pagoda. They are said to include a sacred hair of the Buddha, along with two body relics.

During World War II, the Botataung Pagoda was entirely destroyed and was only reconstructed after the war. It is easy to see that the Shwedagon Pagoda and Sule Pagoda are very gorgeous, visually stunning with their central locations, the Botataung Paya is quiet place with the tranquil atmosphere, partly due to its location along the open riverfront. Do not miss this highlight of the Yangon city and be sure to take a moment to soak in the peaceful spirituality of it all.
