Kuthodaw

Kuthodaw Pagoda is set at the foot of Mandalay Hill. Built by King Mindon at the same time he was building the Royal Palace, its full name is Maha Lawka Marazein Paya but it is often known as the world’s largest book.

The main stupa inside the Kuthodaw complex, standing 57 meters high, is imitated after the Shwezigon Pagoda of Bagan. There are 729 Pitaka pagodas surrounding the central structure. There are 729 Pitaka pagodas surrounding the central structure. It required the efforts of more than 2,400 monks over 6 months to fully recite the text of Tripitaka, which is found in each of the Dhammazedi.

The collection of 719 Pitaka pagodas or shines are located among three enclosures around the main stupa, one containing 42 stone tablets, a second one 168, and a third one 519 tablets.

The marble on which the Tripitika was inscribed were originally cut then transported from the Sagaing Hill, which is some 12 miles away from Mandalay. Each slab of marble stone was cut with standard of 5 feet tall, 6 inches thick and up to 4 feet wide. As all of the carved letters were originally veneered in gold leaf, the work were done in the palace of King Mindon’s. The actual carving was commenced in the year 1860 and was completed in 1869.
