Mandalay

Nestled in the heart of Burma, with 150 years old, Mandalay city boasts as the culturally prime centre and a surprisingly modern metropolis.

The city is ethically diverse and a big contradiction in term of population portions. The Chinese accounts for nearly 40% of Mandalay’s population, whilst the rest is a blend of Burmese, Karin, a few Nepalese & the Shan, whose heritage reaches back into Thailand & Laos.

Mandalay, or ‘City of Jems’ as called was Burma’s royal capital, from its founding in 1857 to 1885, when the British Empire took control. Its most significant attraction is the Royal Palace, which occupies a perfect square, covered by broad standoffish moat, at the base of Mandalay Hill.

The Mandalay Hill, with its abundance of myriad monasteries & pagodas, has been a revered Buddhist pilgrimage spot for many centuries. It is no doubt worth a visit, whether you feel like climbing your way up the slope on foot, or prefer ride up the narrow hillside track.

The metropolitan city is not all religion & culture, however. There is a relatively lively nightlife, with a sprinkling of bars & restaurants serving a wide array of cuisine. Give a try to delicious Muslim Chinese noodles, an authentic food of Mandalay served with a hard blend of spices, chilli and chicken.

There is also a crowded central market and a small night market. Stroll throughout the city you will find a broad variety of tea and coffee shops. Choose one spot you like and sit yourself down to enjoy this charismatic city and its people as they go about their business.
