Home >> Burma Destinations >> Hsipaw

Taking picturesque two and a half hour drive from Pyin Oo Lwin (Maymyo), charming little Hsipaw town in the northwestern Shan state would be ideal for those wishing to really venture off the beaten track, in this world of heavily trodden paths. This Shan State’s wonderful back garden is gradually getting attractive with the adventurous travellers looking to have something off the trail. You can easily find several basic but surprisingly good eateries on the main street and the accommodation is acceptable for most.

Getting up early in the mornings, as the mist lifts, you can see young monks walk the streets calling for alms as shop keepers set up for the day. The town also is highlighted with one of the best tribal minorities markets in all Burma, with tribal groups from the surrounding regions arriving to attend on a regular basis. The market is definitely no tourist market, with the focus on local produce and a diverse range of essential products sourced from across Burma as well as China. The market starts as early as 3am and closes equally early.

The another highlights are located outside of the town, taking just a few minute drive, with several monasteries embracing the outskirts of town. On the way to these attractions, you will drive through to the banks of the Dutawaddy River, passing amongst fields rich in crops and local fruits. And if you are lucky enough, you will be treated to the hypnotic pali prayer chants, broadcast from the nuns monastery at the north end of town, as they sail across the rice paddies and straight into your soul.

If this still does not satisfy you, a river boat cruise to the remote Shan monasteries and villages with some soft trekking and cycling through the almost unworldly picturesque countryside that surrounds Hsipaw would be recommended. Hamlets make the countryside colourful, and as the friendly Shan people tend to their daily tasks a wave and smile is always returned two-fold.
